Presenting the New Daf Kesher
Beginning with this issue, we will be using Constant Contact to produce a paperless Daf Kesher. Many of you may already be familiar with Constant Contact, a popular email marketing company.
Daf Kesher will now come as an email, with the content directly in the email, as opposed to providing a link to a pdf. The email will also have an html attachment that can be opened, if the images do not display on your computer. As always, Daf Kesher issues will be posted to the www.rashi.org website. Some hard copies will be available in the office.
This change will enable us to produce each issue more quickly and it will allow us at Rashi to be guardians of the earth as we save trees by moving to a paperless newsletter.
We will be emailing the newsletter to the email addresses we have on file. If you would also like to receive the Daf Kesher at work or at another email, please send that address to dafkesher@rashi.org and we will include it.
We hope you enjoy the "newer" Daf Kesher and we look forward to your comments.

News from Grades K-2
If this cold winter makes you think of hibernating, talk to a Rashi kindergarten student! Our youngest students learned about hibernation, migration and adaptation as they studied how animals prepare for winter. The children participated in many hands-on scientific investigations to help them understand these concepts. They chose animals and did research projects about that animals and how they adapt to winter. They created a habitat for an animal that hibernates, transforming a classroom loft into a bear's cave. Hibernation Day was a fun way to culminate their studies. The children came to school in pajamas and enjoyed hot chocolate and pancakes!
In First Grade the children studied different shelters, including the synagogue as a special shelter for the Jewish people. They learned about the different parts of the synagogue with a special look at the Arone Kodesh as a shelter for the Torah. The children created parts of the décor of a synagogue, including the keter (Torah crown), chagorah (Torah belt), and the chalonot (stained glass windows).
Second Grade recently visited the Jackson Homestead/Newton Museum to complement their studies about the Wampanoag Native American tribe and the English colonists (commonly called Pilgrims) who lived along the Charles River in the 17th century. At the museum, students learned about medicinal herbs and plants used by the Wampanoag, found commonly used English words whose roots are in the Algonquian language, tried toys used by Wampanoag children, and looked at tools made from natural resources, such as a stone axe used for making mishoons (dugout canoes). Now the second graders are using the information they gathered, along with independent research from books and the Internet, to write nonfiction books comparing the Wampanoag tribe to the colonists. Each child is responsible for a specific topic, such as clothing, food, shelter, or language.
What does the year 2008 bring? Next week First graders and their parents will join together for a special Family Education program with a Social Justice focus. Parents will experience first hand how we look at literature with social justice themes with a Jewish lens. Theater Arts specialist Bonny Goldberg will introduce the Kindergartners to their play, which they will be performing in a few weeks, and second graders will be busy writing their play. As a school we will be learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement.
We come back from vacation excited, invigorated and ready to learn. Happy New Year!

Morning Drop-Off
The beginning of the New Year 2008 is a good time to review the protocol for morning drop-off. The following procedure has been instituted for the safety and consideration of our children. Your cooperation in adhering to these rules is most appreciated.
ˇ School begins at 8:00 - arriving before 8 am will make for a calmer morning for everyone ˇ When possible, park and walk your child into school; there are plenty of parking spaces ˇ Please do not talk on your cellphone when arriving at school
If you drop off:
ˇ Drive all the way up to the ramp - do not let your children out at the end of the driveway ˇ If the line extends to the street, do not block the road or the entrance ˇ Use the drop off lane for drop off only - do not use it as a through-way ˇ Drivers, stay in your car in the drop off lane; we will assist your child(ren) ˇ Do your best to have the children get out on the passenger side of the car ˇ Enter the school through the door on the far right at the top of the stairs; it is unlocked in the morning
Thank you!

Volunteers Needed for Annual Dinner
Plans are well underway for Rashi's Annual Dinner, to be held May 20 at Congregation Mishkan Tefila and honoring Rashi grandparents Marjorie and Bertram Paley.
We are pleased to announce that Dinner Co-chairs will be Rashi parents Dena and Michael Rashes and Rashi grandparents Rhoda and Bill Sapers (who are also best friends of the honorees). In addition to our co-chairs, we have a wonderful group of vice chairs to assist with our fundraising and leadership. They include: Abbie and Kenn Elmore, Steve Grossman, Dana Gershon and Rabbi Jonah Pesner, Jennifer and Luis Vidal, Marianne Paley-Nadel and Eric Nadel, Nancy Zimmerman and Andrei Shleifer, Lisa and Neil Wallack, David Bunis, Ellen May and Johanna Gordon.
This year, perhaps more than ever, we are going to need help from the Rashi parent community. If you have ever planned a bar/bat mitzvah or wedding, you have the experience we need. There is a journey that one takes from identifying a florist to actually having the flowers on the table - and that's kind of volunteer engagement we need. Volunteers will be asked to attend two to three meetings, handle a variety of details prior to the dinner and assist with their specific logistics during a portion of the event. We always have a great deal of fun putting this together and really need your energy and experience to make this a special evening.
Top of the List of Volunteer Responsibilities include:
Co-chairs for Live Auction - just five items
Catering Liaison
Flower Coordinator
Program Stage Manager
Temple Liaison for staffing, set up, placement and break down
Music and AV volunteer
I look forward to hearing from you with questions about these volunteer opportunities and will look forward to working with you on this important fundraiser for Rashi.

From the Annual Appeal Chair
Did you know that 100% of our children receive tuition assistance?!
If you're like me, this statement took you completely by surprise. However, the truth is that the full cost of a Rashi education is not completely covered by tuition. Without your gifts to the Annual Appeal, Rashi will experience a budgetary shortfall of approximately $2,800 per student this year.
In a financially diverse community such as ours, the reality is that some of us can cover the gap for our own child(ren), some of us are not able to do so, and some of us are in the position to be able not only to cover the shortfall for our own child(ren) but also do so for one (or two or many) more.
Supporting Rashi financially beyond paying tuition is an opportunity for each of us to invest in our children's futures. Additionally, when the school is able to report a high level of participation in the Annual Appeal from Rashi parents, it has a very positive influence on donors in the greater Jewish community. That is, when benefactors outside of the immediate Rashi community see a high percentage of Rashi families contributing to the Annual Appeal, they too are more likely to donate dollars to our school. It is worth noting that while tuition is not tax deductible, gifts to Rashi may provide a financial benefit for those who are able to claim charitable giving as a tax deduction.
I realize that a lot has been asked of all of us this year as we have accelerated the capital campaign to build our new home in Dedham. However, Rashi relies on the parent community to enable our school to thrive. If each of us considers the Rashi Annual Appeal a primary philanthropic priority, together we will all help Rashi cover the costs required to operate the school. Regardless of the amount, every single gift makes a true difference.
Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Kathy Cohen, Annual Appeal Chair

B'nai Mitzvah Dates
Please be sure to notify Adrienne Freedman as soon as you have a date for your child's Bar/Bat Mitzvah. She maintains a database of all Bar/Bat Mitzvah dates and distributes updated lists periodically to families in the relevant grades.

| Reminder |
|
Children go outside for recess and physical education on most days (even in the snow).
PLEASE send your child with the appropriate clothing including jackets, hats, mittens/gloves, and boots, as needed.
It also might be a good idea to send a sweater or sweatshirt to be kept in his/her locker for a sudden change in the weather.
