News from Grades 3-5

Think back to your days at school. Did you take notes while your teacher lectured at the front of the room? Was your learning about Martin Luther King limited to reading the "I Have a Dream"  speech? Did you find your science project in a book? Learning at Rashi couldn't be more different.Rashi students learn through real life experiences that complement the studying they do in books and in the classroom.

mentorLast Thursday night, 41 fifth graders talked animatedly with their science fair mentors. This year, as in past years, mentors include parents, faculty, spouses of faculty, and alumni who are professionals in the field of science. Mentors came for the evening to help students refine research questions, brainstorm resources, and write procedures for their science fair experiments. Our science fair is different from many other schools' as Rashi students aren't exploding volcanoes with baking soda and vinegar or building circuits; rather, they are collecting data to answer a scientific question that requires a controlled experiment. Examples from this year are: what type of solution best preserves a dead fish, does gender affect a person's perception of optical illusions, and which brand of mouthwash actually best eliminates bacteria? Students will keep in touch with their mentors over the next few months. The entire process culminates with a Science Showcase on March 25 when mentors will return to Rashi to view students' projects and display boards. The display will highlight the experiments, results, and conclusions.

Third graders are taking a leadership role in helping Rashi families learn about Martin Luther King and his mission.  They are helping to organize the first annual MLK Service Day on Monday, January 21. Students have helped to brainstorm the activities and have discussed at length the connections between Dr. King's beliefs and the need to reach out and empower others. The activities that will take place at school are: assembling birthday boxes for local shelters so children can have birthday parties, making scarves for homeless shelters, writing an alphabet book as a sequel to 26 Big Things that Small Hands Can Do, and illustrating for display at Rashi excerpts from the U.N. Declaration of Children's Rights. In the coming week, you will hear more about how families can sign up to come and help out by donating supplies.

Fourth graders are studying Pirke Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) and discussing how these pithy yet incredibly powerful sayings are affecting their social and personal lives outside the classroom.  The discussions and effects have been so far reaching that the fourth grade team worked with Stephanie Rotsky to model a family program after these rich lessons. Parents and children came together and studied the text, "If I am not for myself, who will be, but if I am only for myself what am I, and if not now when." (Pirke Avot 1:14) They translated the Hebrew words that they recognized and explored how these ideas are relevant to their lives day to day.

So, perhaps you recall from your school days asking your teachers, "Why do we need to know this?"  Students at Rashi don't ask this question, because they know that the learning that happens in the classroom every day from 8:00 to 3:00 positively influences their decisions and actions daily.

Admissions Screening Update
For many year's the Admission Manager Anne Puchkoff has screened each and every Kindergarten and First Grade applicant child. Just ask any student in the school what they remember about that day and they will tell you about hopping on one foot or showing Anne how they could skip or building a tunnel out of blocks. Anne has always made children and parents comfortable and happy throughout the admission process. What was missing was that often the early childhood faculty didn't get to meet the children until they arrived for their first day.  Now we are taking the wonderful and warm experience that Anne gives children and families and expanding it. We are adding the missing piece.

Beginning this year, children still get to hop and skip, build and draw, and they are doing all that in a small group visit.  Now our wonderful early childhood teachers, school psychologist, learning specialist and Gr. K-2 Division Director are integral members of the admissions process, meeting the children and getting to know each and every one of them

How is it going?  We had our first group visit this past Monday, and the children who came had a wonderful time. Parents reported that they didn't want to leave! And rest assured, of course Anne is still that wonderful and welcoming part of the process.

Athletics

There was a middle school triple-header at South Area Solomon Schechter on Sunday, January 6. The 6th Grade Boys team, Middle School Girls team and the 7th/8th Grade Boys team played very entertaining contests and all emerged victorious.

The Boys 6th Grade team's talent was on display again as they cruised to victory. They played exceptional defense and passed well to the open man. This team likes to play fast-paced basketball and after a slow, early Sunday morning start, they really picked up the pace and out-hustled their opponent. High-energy play leads to easy baskets and makes any group of players a tough team. If they continue to play with maximum effort, these 6th graders will be hard to stop.

The Sunday morning triple-header ended with a nail-biting, edge of your seat, down to the wire affair. It seems like every game our 7th/8th Grade boys play ends in some dramatic and memorable way. This was already the second game of the young season against SASSDS, a very skilled and evenly matched opponent.  As in the first game, the outcome wasn't decided until the final minute.  With the game tied and only 20 seconds left, the team decided to ignore their coach's designed play and go about scoring on their own. After a missed shot, our boys aggressively crashed the boards and scored on a put-back with only 8 seconds left (who needs that coach or his clipboard!!).  Smart and disciplined defense helped run the final seconds off the clock and our boys once again earned a hard-fought victory.

Pizza Thursday is always a fun day at Rashi.  Yachad volunteers (including
Suen Appolon, Terry MacDonald-Chair, Krista Alperin, Lauren Burke, and Alex Seriy, above) are
always greeted with "Yay, it's pizza day!" Pizza Thursday is one of the many Yachad activities that could not happen without the help of parent volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Andie or Susan.
We are looking for two people to co-chair the Wrapping Paper Fundraiser for next year. It could be you!
