Reports Are in the Mail!
We have mailed the reports from your children's teachers today. These reports are checklists which you can use to measure your children's progress so far this year. They are done with love and respect for each child and offer information and insight about your child.
We are sending the reports out now to give you information to consider before the parent-teacher conferences after school on March 12 and all day March 13. Please contact Manya Fine in the main office if you would like to make an appointment for a conference with your child's K-5 Hebrew teacher or another specialist.
We are looking forward to seeing you at conferences!

From the Stage
This past week the 8th Grade presented "Beauty and the Beast," the annual Hebrew show. Students have been working on this performance since November, learning lines, songs and choreography.
This production represents collaboration between departments at its finest. The rehearsals take place during the Hebrew classes and they work in the theater with the theater specialist. The art specialist helped design the costumes, the Spanish specialist, who is also a talented choreographer, worked on the dance and the Middle School Scenic Design Elective painted the scenery. The final product is a beautiful production entirely in Hebrew presented by very poised and confident 8th graders. The Hebrew speakers in the audience appreciated very clearly articulated and projected dialogue.
On March 5 the third grade presented their annual production of Aesop's Fables. The dialogue was written by the students during this unit of study. The presentation was full of energy and greatly enjoyed by the audiences. This year also marked the debut of a Hebrew fable, performed by Batshi's Hebrew class. We look forward to this continuing to be a part of the annual show.

Be Happy It's Adar!
This Friday marks the beginning of the new month of Adar II, the second Adar as this year is a leap year in the Jewish calendar. The rabbis teach "be happy it's Adar" because Adar is the month of Purim.
Be happy it's Adar! I have been spending time in several classrooms this week teaching Purim. Our children are indeed our future. Students will be learning about Purim and the mitzvah of Matanot L'Evyonim, Gifts to the Poor, through our school wide Tamchui celebration.
Be happy it's Adar! Our eighth grade Hebrew play last week was a glorious success. Our students performed an entire play in Hebrew. We owe a great deal of thanks to our Hebrew staff, in particular Shlomit Lipton for her hard work. Maya Dalzell and Ora Rates worked tirelessly with the students as well as, of course, our drama teacher, Bonny Goldberg. What an accomplishment for everyone.
Be happy it's Adar! We are continuing our celebration of Israel at 60. We had a visit from Uri Feinberg, Rashi parent and Interim Director of Education at Temple Israel. Uri taught our second graders about the water sources in Israel and our third graders about the mountains and geography of Israel. The Middle School continued its overview of Modern Zionism through music.
Be happy it's Adar! Purim is coming quickly and we are planning a new megilla reading with parent and student readers as well as a huge costume parade! Please plan to join us on Friday, March 21, at 8:15 am, and please wear a costume.
Be happy it's Adar! Our eighth graders are preparing for their trip to Israel!
Be happy it's Adar! Aside from all of the learning, planning and celebrating that is a hallmark of Rashi, there is a new spirit beginning to blossom. Several parents have approached me over the last few weeks with great ideas for partnerships between our staff, students and parents.
Our Torah reading for this week ends the Book of Exodus. This is one of my favorite pieces of Torah. "When Moses finished the work, the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting and the Presence of the Lord filled the Tabernacle." The glory of God so filled the mishkan that even Moses could not enter. The particulars of the Tabernacle and all of the individual work came together to create the Mishkan, the tabernacle. But the whole was greater than the sum of the parts. This week is a Shabbat Shekalim, one of the special shabbatot that surround Purim and Pesach. All of Israel was to give machazit hashekel - a half shekel. When we all contribute to the community the product takes on a new level of kedushah -- of holiness. I am looking forward to an exciting season from Purim to Pesach when we experience new beginnings and growth.
Be Happy It's Adar!

JDSL Basketball Tournament
On Sunday, March 2, Rashi's boys' and girls' Middle School basketball teams participated in the first annual Jewish Day School League Tournament at the Gann Academy in Waltham. The JDSL is a newly formed basketball league consisting of teams from Boston area Jewish Day Schools. Participating in the league are Cohen Hillel; Maimonides; Rashi; South Area Solomon Schechter; Solomon Schechter, Newton. An estimated 300 players, parents and fans packed into the Student Activity Center and were treated to some well-played and exciting basketball games.
Rashi's girls' team opened the action against South Area Schechter. For most of the first half it looked as if our girls were battling through the early Sunday morning start and feeling the effects of late night celebrating at B'nai Mitzvahs. Losing by two at halftime, our girls woke up in the second half and really turned on the jets as they cruised to a convincing win and a berth in the semifinals.
Our boys also opened their day with SASSDS. This was the third game between the two teams this season with Rashi winning the previous two by a total of 4 points. This game certainly lived up to hype. Both teams played up-tempo, aggressive basketball. The lead changed hands several times before Rashi pulled away late in the second half and held on to another close victory and a date with Schechter (Newton) in the semifinals.
Earning a spot in the semifinals was a great step for our teams but also meant they had to go up against the #1 seeds to reach the tournament finals. Both our girls' game and our boys' game would be rematches against opponents who had convincing victories over Rashi earlier in the season. But this is tournament time. Perhaps a little of that 'March Madness' would factor in and give the underdogs a fighting chance.
The girls would take to the floor first against Cohen Hillel. The first half was a defensive struggle. Both teams came out very aggressively and made it hard for anyone to score. Our girls were keeping it close until the end of the first half when Cohen Hillel went on a run to stretch their halftime lead to 16. Our beloved Raiders have earned the reputation as a second half team and this game was a perfect example. Their defense remained aggressive and led to a flurry of steals and lay-ups. They just kept chipping away at the lead until, with only 4 minutes to go, the lead was cut to 2. Could our girls pull the upset of the year? Down the stretch Cohen Hillel was able to put enough points on the board to hold off Rashi's valiant comeback attempt. Even though our girls did not reach the finals this year, they should be very proud of their effort and improvements throughout the year.
Our boys faced a very impressive opponent in the JDSL #1 seed and undefeated boys' team from Solomon Schechter (Newton). Our boys knew that this was going to be a tough match-up and if they wanted to make a game of it they would have to play their best game of the year. Schechter jumped out to an early lead but Rashi fought right back to keep the game close throughout the first half. Our boys played exceptional defense in the first half, forcing their opponent into low-percentage shots but had a difficult time securing the rebounds against a tall and athletic group. On offense, our boys used their up-tempo attack to beat their opponent up the court and get easy looks at the basket. The game remained in doubt well into the second half until a couple of our defensive breakdowns and continued struggles on the boards helped Schechter pull away to victory and a berth in the finals. Our boys have come a long way during the season and should be very proud of the progress they have made in becoming a team to be reckoned with.
I would like to give a couple of 'shout outs' to all the people who worked so hard to make this tournament a reality. To all the players, coaches, parents, family and friends who spent a long Sunday playing and watching basketball. To the Gann Academy who not only let us use their wonderful facilities but also were incredibly helpful in the planning of every detail. To Adrienne Freedman who solved a last-minute problem and provided food for all our players. To Manya Fine, Miriam Brody and Venus Corriveau whose technical savvy and artistic input produced a beautiful tournament program.

Parent Participation in the Capital Campaign
We want to thank the 52% of parents who have already supported the capital campaign. Your leadership sets an example for us all.
Marsha Moller has graciously agreed to be the Capital Campaign Parent Chair. Mother to eighth grader Sam Moller, Marsha is a seasoned leader and campaign solicitor for CJP. She is now using her experience to work with Capital Campaign Grade Captains to help achieve our goal of 100% parent participation. As a reminder, Rashi parent participation influences greater community gifts, so the percentage of participation affects many more than the 205 Rashi families who can give this year. We are so grateful to have Marsha at the helm.
This week's parasha, Ki Tisseh, focuses on the census of the children of Israel. Each person is asked to give to the building of the Mishkan Tefila - to be counted, literally, among the people of Israel. To increase our current level of 52%, we will be holding two phone-a-thons in coming weeks. If you have yet to give to the campaign, please take the next few days to determine your level of giving so that you can be counted. Please give your fellow parents a positive response when they call.
