About The Rashi School

Excellence in Jewish Education Since 1986

The Rashi School welcomes you to learn more about our history and community. Since 1986, The Rashi School has been Dedham’s leading co-ed, Independent School affiliated with the Reform Movement of Judaism. We offer private Jewish education for students ranging from Kindergarten through Grade 8. A Rashi education is differentiated by Rashi’s commitment to social justice and multigenerational programming, which permeates all curricular areas.

The Rashi School got its start more than 40 years ago when Rabbi Henry Zoob and a group of dedicated rabbis & community leaders had the vision for a Reform Jewish Day School in the Boston area. They believed that Jews who shared a progressive approach to Jewish life needed a place where their children could receive an excellent education that integrated both Jewish and secular studies. In 1982, Rabbi Zoob formed a committee to explore the possibility of beginning such a school. Four years later, in 1986, The Rashi School opened its doors with 16 students in our Kindergarten and First Grade classes.

Rashi’s Core Values

In the early years of Rashi’s existence, our school grew, and our grades were expanded. In 1996, Rashi opened a Middle School to better serve our growing community and prepare our students for secondary school. Rashi introduced our Core Values in 1999 which promote both Jewish and secular values important to the Rashi community. Our Core Values promote 5 pillars that the Rashi community keeps central to our roots and everything we do on campus. Core Values include Learning, Justice, Community, Respect, and Divine Spirit. From how we treat each other in the hallways to our curriculum, these values are intertwined in all that we do.

Along with ensuring academic excellence, our extracurricular programs began to expand and in 2006 Rashi took its very first 8th Grade trip to Israel. What a special experience to be able to connect with your culture and history by visiting the country where Judaism originated!

A Wandering Community Finds its Home
Over the years, the Rashi School has had seven buildings. Our most momentous move was in 2010 when Rashi moved to our permanent home in Dedham, MA. Rashi’s building and campus enable the school to achieve greatness in education, sports, and multigenerational programming.
