Chair of Hebrew Department

The Rashi School seeks a Chair of Hebrew Language to lead a department of nine Hebrew teachers beginning August 2018. At Rashi, we teach modern Hebrew from kindergarten through 8th grade. 

The goal of our Hebrew language instruction is to support the joy of learning Hebrew, to promote students’ comfort with and proficiency in spoken and written Hebrew, and to deepen students’ connection with the culture and people of Israel. Reporting to the School Rabbi/Director of Jewish Studies, the Hebrew Department Chair is tasked with advancing excellence in Hebrew teaching and learning.

Position requirements include:
• Supervise teachers: Observe, mentor, support and evaluate Rashi’s Hebrew faculty; as needed, recruit and orient new Hebrew teachers
• Oversee student learning: placement, assessment, experience; coordinate proactive parent communication and field parent questions
• Foster collaboration and collegiality and a growth mindset throughout the department
• Teach in the classroom (likely two or three sections)
• Implement professional development for the department
• Oversee the articulation and evolution of the Hebrew curriculum scope and sequence K-8
• Coordinate the business of the department, including materials, budget, etc.
• Collect and analyze data about the effectiveness of the program, and develop action steps to continue its growth

To advance Rashi’s mission and core values, this leader will:
• Collaborate with colleagues to advance Jewish learning at Rashi as part of Rashi’s “J-Team”
• Seek opportunities to integrate Hebrew and Israel into other areas of the school through collaboration with colleagues
• Participate in the life of the school community as a colleague and educator

Essential capacities for successful leadership of the Rashi Hebrew department include:
• Fluency in Hebrew
• An undergraduate degree in education and/or Hebrew or related.
• Proven excellence in teaching Hebrew K-12 and experience with differentiated foreign language instruction
• Strong grasp of student-centered, developmentally appropriate pedagogy
• Previous leadership and supervisory experience
• Ability to nurture faculty growth and reflection, and a keen understanding of how to offer effective feedback
• Ability to skillfully balance the department’s history while managing change and guiding others in change processes
• Deep commitment to collaborative leadership
• An interest in being part of a community both inside and outside the classroom and department.
• Have a strong commitment to professional growth and development, both for oneself and the department
