Chasing Peace on the Playground

This year, I have the opportunity to have lunch and recess on Friday with the first grade and thus I get to hang out with them and the second graders on the playground. Last year, I somehow became the playground photographer on Thursdays (step aside Annie Leibovitz!) moving from one place to another to capture gymnastics moves, climbing adventures, friends having fun, and giggles and smiles. Last Friday, we had fun at recess sharing peace signs with one another.

The mitzvah – Rodeph Shalom – is sometimes translated as “chasing peace.” It can mean ‘don’t wait around for peace to find you – each of us needs to go after peace – pursue it – chase it down.’ In Pirkei Avot, the Sayings of our Ancestors, we learn: “By three things is the world sustained: justice, truth, and peace.”

The first and second graders are on the right path!
