Reading Buddies in Grade 4 and Grade 1 has been a staple at Rashi for more than a decade.

A few years ago, we changed the name to just “Buddies” as we realized the time together across grades could be so much more. Our time is spent reading, getting to know each other, and playing together. We also incorporate activities other than reading to broaden the experience and build on curriculum in new, exciting ways.

Each year we play dreidel, do projects related to first grade learning, and have even published a Buddies book. The flexibility we have to use that time in whatever way we choose allows us to plan activities that are most beneficial and fun to the students.

While academic learning does occur during these blocks, the most powerful learning comes from the interactions between the students.

Grade 4 students show up each time and step into the role of the leader. They model by example and learn about flexibility and patience. It is so beautiful to watch these relationships grow through the year.
